Service01

Maintenance Performance Assessments

Off-site data review combined with on-site assessment to give the operation a benchmark view of where it actually sits. Examines downtime, planning and execution, facility utilisation, reliability, supply chain, and component performance.

Output: a clear, evidence-based picture of current state plus practical, prioritised improvement recommendations — the kind that can be acted on the week after the report lands.

Service02

Long Range Planning Support

Ongoing planning capacity for operations that need it. For remote sites, development of a 24-month strategic plan tuned to site conditions, with monthly updates feeding short and medium-term operational planning.

Includes shutdown planning support — sequencing major component interventions to minimise production conflicts and resource clashes — as part of the rolling planning horizon rather than as a separate exercise.

The value is consistency — a plan that stays current, rather than one that ages between consulting engagements. This is the service supported by NumaCore, Birchwood's proprietary planning platform.

Service03

Strategy Development

Hands-on support crafting the major elements of asset management strategy — maintenance strategy, supply chain strategy, equipment replacement strategy. Particular focus on life-of-mine planning for large mobile equipment fleets, where the wrong decision compounds over years.

Service04

Materials Management Reviews

Review of how the materials function actually supports the maintenance program. Covers MRP parameter health, parts supersession and its downstream impact on planning, demand forecasting (with particular attention to winter-road planning where stock-out risk is structural), and the operational fit between supply chain and major rebuild or shutdown campaigns.

How we engage

Three modes.
Fitted to the operation.

The engagement type is the second conversation. The first is whether the work itself is a fit.

A program that accumulates value.
Not a report that collects dust.

Who we serve

The clients we work with.

Primary client profile

Medium to large open pit mining operations managing mixed mobile equipment fleets. Typically 20 to 100+ pieces of heavy equipment across haul trucks, shovels, dozers, graders, and loaders. Operations running SAP or equivalent ERP. Maintenance management teams that have the data but lack the specialist capacity to run structured planning, strategy, or shutdown work in-house.

Common situations we are called into

  • A maintenance program that has drifted from a structured plan into reactive day-to-day decisions.
  • Capital plans being built reactively rather than from a live forecast.
  • ERP data that is not being translated into meaningful planning decisions.
  • A single individual carrying the institutional knowledge of how the fleet is run.
  • A fleet that has grown or changed, and a planning approach that has not kept pace.

What Birchwood Advisory is not

Birchwood Advisory does not do day-to-day dispatch, operational execution management, or generalist organisational consulting. The focus is mobile equipment maintenance — performance assessment, long-range planning (including shutdown sequencing), strategy, and the materials function that supports it all. If that is not the problem you are solving, we are probably not the right firm.
